Taxonomy: f. Enteromonadidae
Animal: Enteromonas sp. 1 09.jpg
Sites: Gut
Comment:
Enteromonas - like cyst 4 - 10 x 4 - 6 microns in fresh faecal preparation, oval with 2 nuclei. E.hominis is considered to be non-pathogenic and often not recognised because of its small size so little is known of this organism; it may be more common than is thought. There were a large number in the faeces of this 50 year old female with 2 months history of diarrhoea following a trip to Africa but no known pathogens were isolated. E. hominis cysts are elongate or oval with 1 - 4 nuclei, usually 2 with no fibrils unlike E. nana cysts, which it resembles. EM was performed on this specimen to assist in identification (see 12 02, 03). Enteromonas hominis diagnosis was confirmed when the final specimen also contained typical Enteromonas trophozoites (see 12 04, 05 and 1 02).
